LEADING LEAN

Leading Lean

Leading Lean , by Jerrold Solomon (Shingo Prize Winning Author of Who’s Counting?), is the second in a series of business novels about the Lean transformation process at Tricor Electronics, a fictional company. It follows the characters originally introduced in Who’s Counting? and exposes the human interactions that occur during any Lean transformation. Leading Lean illustrates the angst people go through when asked to change, demonstrates the teamwork and leadership required, exposes the paradigms that must be changed, and lays bare the unwavering commitment required from everyone, especially the CEO. It brings to life the unending stream of interpersonal challenges as the novel chronicles the hour-by-hour progression of a three-day 5S event. Leading Lean demonstrates the critical role a trained facilitator plays in successfully navigating the Lean transformation and provides a road map that will enable your company to compete more effectively in the 21 st century.

Introduction to Lean Manufacturing Video (DVD)

Kanban is a Japanese term for a visual system which is used to trigger activity upstream in a given process. The most important point to remember about a Kanban system, is that the best Kanban system is no Kanban system and that it is only a substitute for not being able to implement single piece flow in your process. Examples of Kanban Systems are shown from Carver Pump Company, Muscatine, IA, who uses Kanban cards, bins, and visual replenishment to deliver a wide variety of military and commercial pumps. A second example of Kanban is at Ariens Company, Brillion, WI, who has converted from a computer based inventory control system to using Kanban to trigger each step in the process of building snow blowers and lawn mowers. In the summary, six simple rules are presented that must be followed to make your Kanban System successful.

Factory Simulation (BOX GAME)

The Factory Simulation (box game) is an enlightening demonstration of the benefits of one-piece flow pull manufacturing and manufacturing cells versus push/batch manufacturing.

The game compares batch or push manufacturing techniques (traditional manufacturing) to one piece pull manufacturing using Manufacturing Cells. It shows how quality and productivity improve while reducing WIP inventory, rework, product through time and floor space required. It also illustrates how Setup Reduction and Total Produtive Maintenance are a prerequisite to Pull Manufacturing.

The game requires that you set up a 20’x20’ factory with four folding tables and requires 7 people to run the factory. The factory assembles a product (6"x3"x3" Styrofoam box). Three different ways to run the factory are compared (Push 6, Pull 6, and Pull 1). The game takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
